Tea is a beverage that almost no one can resist. It is really astonishing how many different flavors may come just from a few tea leaves immersed into boiled or cold water. Not surprising though that tea is the second most consumed drink after water!

Before listing the tea pros for our body & mind and the plentiful varieties you may taste at our stores, it would be nice to learn…

…The story behind tea

Just like so many discoveries, it was by chance that tea was brought to our attention. Let’s go back to 2737 BC, in China, when Emperor Shennong decided to visit a distant region of his empire.

The Emperor believed that water should be drunk boiled. So, when he decided to make a stop with his attendants, he ordered them to boil water for drinking and quenching their thirst. And then magic happened!

While they were boiling the water, a wind blew and brought some leaves into one of the pots. The Emperor tried to react but, to his surprise, he saw the water turning yellow and on top of that it gave out a very nice aroma! That was the moment when tea was discovered!

At first, it was used as medicine but since the 3rd century AD onwards, tea was massively produced and broadly settled in people’s minds as a beverage. In Europe, tea became known far later, specifically in 1610 when the Portuguese brought it over on behalf of the Dutch.

Initially, tea was very expensive and therefore for the few that could afford it. But in 1675, when its price decreased to fair levels, it started being marketed widely. Thus, it passed from the Netherlands to France and then to the rest of Europe.

What an irony however? The British, who are today the most fanatical tea drinkers and boast about it, were probably the last to discover it! It was in 1839 that the first tea shipment arrived in London from the english colonies in India!

Tea varieties and benefits

Let’s find out which are the most popular tea varieties: Έτσι, οι πιο σημαντικές από αυτές είναι οι εξής:

Green tea, black tea, rooibos (red) tea, white tea, Oolong tea and herbal tea

Green tea is probably the most popular one, whereas research brings to light more and more of its benefits. It has been scientifically proven that it may contribute to loss or control of weight and assist in bone density increase.

It is also a remarkable antioxidant, while it is recently suggested as a contributor to the fight against Alzheimer’s disease.

White tea is considered to be the least processed, being milder and smoother in taste It has the highest levels of antioxidants and is deemed as an antibacterial and antiviral agent that boosts our immune system. It further helps tooth enamel maintenance and is a key ingredient in anti-aging nutrition.

Black tea is undoubtedly one of the world’s most widespread tea varieties. It is the most highly processed (compared to other varieties) and has a luscious taste. The Western world knows it as black tea because of the colour of the leaves after processing. In China, it is called red tea because of the colour it gives to the drink.

It shields the immune system, lowers stress levels and it is claimed to be a good helper against Parkinson’s disease. Studies suggest that has positive effects against cholesterol, arthritis and obesity.

Last, but not least, Oolong is the traditional chinese tea. It is something between black and green tea, having, however, less caffeine comparing to black tea.

It is known to shield our immune system and speed-up metabolism, while it has a soothing effect in cases of diabetes, eczemas and allergies. Finally, it contributes to weight loss.

Why choose drinking a Coffee Berry tea?

We think of tea preparation as a ritual that will give you maximum pleasure sip by sip. We strongly emphasize on the right quantity, proper temperature and boiling time.

Each variety has its own ideal temperature, but a common principle would be that water should not be boiling beyond the ideal temperature, because otherwise the water oxygen, which is so important for proper tea preparation, would be vanished.

Tea leaves are considered more premium comparing to tea “powder” which is broadly marketed, and of course, Coffee Berry stores use exclusively tea leaves for your beloved beverage.

However, the most critical factor that sets us apart from what you have so far tasted is the entire preparation procedure. We do not use tea bags, but pure tea leaves brewed with Largo dripper, providing you with maximum delightfulness.
